He taught me not to confuse how I am feeling with how I am doing, that my emotions were not the truth, and not to listen to my head. These things were all vitally important but what saved me was his love.

It really is awesome to watch someone grow, because they come from the same place I did. And they want the same things I want. But you can only keep what you have by giving it away.
Most of us were not totally willing to have all of our character defects removed totally right away. Pick out an easy one, and become willing to have it removed immediately. Then, pick out a harder one, and nibble around the edges of its desirability. Help yourself be more willing for its removal than you were before. For the really tough ones, pray for willingness to become willing.

But as you interact with the community, with other people, you'll see what it's doing to your relationships and you'll see what it's doing to you personally. And you'll hear other people talk about their defects of character and how they have overcome them, and that will give you hope.

I used to mistake chaos for excitement. In the first few months of recovery, I was mistaking serenity for boredom. But AA has given me the opportunity to have joy in the small victories in life. I have awareness of those things now: a great phone call, a walk with my dogs, a perfect sunny day and silly things that amuse me. Laughing at last! Real laughter at moments I wouldn't have even noticed when I was using.

For many alcoholics, one of the biggest first challenges is the get-together. Alcohol is almost always available, and indulged in, when a group gathers in the name of “fun.” So we fuss and worry and struggle with how we are going to feel and, more importantly, what we think we are going to be seen as: The boring alkie. The soda-sucking sober gal. The teetotalling tosser in the corner. This is pride talking. And it is, of course, hogwash.
